Frequently Asked Questions

For Students

How do I create an account and enroll in my course?
  1. Go to www.xyzhomework.com and click Student Sign Up.
  2. Sign in with the account you just created.
  3. Click Enroll in New Class and enter the Course ID from your instructor.
  4. Click the course name on your homepage to begin.

Your instructor doesn't add you — the roster fills in automatically as students enroll.

How much does XYZ Homework cost?

Every student gets a 15-day free trial, then XYZ Homework is $45 for 3 years of unlimited access.

How do I activate my account?

Your free trial gives you full access for 15 days, starting day one. To keep working — during the trial or after it ends — click Membership Alert at the top of your course, then Activate Now, and either enter an access code or pay online by card.

Once activated, your access lasts 3 years.

How do I activate with an access code?

Bought a code from your bookstore, or got one from your instructor? Click Membership Alert → Activate Now, choose Option 1 (I have an access code), and enter it. You're set for 3 years.

I paid, but my account still shows a free trial. What's wrong?

This almost always means you have two XYZ Homework accounts, and the payment went on one while you're signed in to the other.

Sign out, then sign back in with the email you used when you paid (often your school email). Still locked out? Email support@xyzhomework.com from that address and we'll connect your payment to the right account.

I can't log in, or I forgot my password.

Use the Forgot Password link on the sign-in page to reset it. Make sure you're using the same email you signed up with — it's easy to accidentally create a second account. Still stuck? Email support@xyzhomework.com.

I'm using XYZ Homework through Canvas or another LMS.

If your instructor set up XYZ inside Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle, or D2L/Brightspace, just open the XYZ link from your course in your LMS — your account is created automatically and your scores sync back to your LMS gradebook. You may still see a one-time activation step.

How picky is the system about how I type my answers?

Pretty forgiving — extra spaces won't be marked wrong. The wording usually tells you the form expected: if it asks for an equation, type the whole thing (for example, y=2x+1); if the blank already shows y=, just enter what y equals (for example, 2x+1).

For Instructors

Do I set up the class roster, or is it created automatically?

It's automatic — the roster fills in as students create their accounts and enroll with your Course ID.

Can I see assignments the way my students will?

Yes. At the upper right of the course page are three views: Instructor, Student, and Quick Rearrange. Click Student to see exactly what students see, and Instructor to switch back.

Do students get more than one chance on a question?

By default, template courses give every student unlimited attempts, 3 at a time: a student gets 3 tries at a version, sees the answer, then can click "Try Another Similar Version."

You can change this per assessment — unlimited on homework, but one attempt on a quiz or test, for example.

How do I make something a Test or Quiz?

Two settings control this:

  • Settings — set Submission Type → Quiz-style so students submit all answers at once and see results afterward, instead of instant per-question feedback.
  • Gradebook category — to group it under "Test"/"Quiz," go to Gradebook → Settings → Categories → Add New Category, then set the assessment's Core Options → Gradebook Category to it. It appears in the gradebook once the assessment is live.
I don't see any entries in my gradebook.

Template courses include premade assignments for every section, and they appear automatically.

Hidden assessments won't show until there are student scores — that lets you keep unused assessments out of the way without deleting them.

My school uses a different gradebook. Can I still use XYZ Homework?

Yes. The XYZ gradebook updates automatically, and you can export grades to a .csv file (from the gradebook's export settings) to open in any spreadsheet or import into your school's system. If your LMS supports it, grades can also sync automatically — see the LMS question below.

Can I connect XYZ Homework to my LMS (Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle, D2L)?

Yes — XYZ Homework integrates with any major LMS, and grades sync back automatically. Most XYZ schools use Canvas.

Does XYZ Homework support students with accessibility needs?

Yes — XYZ Homework supports keyboard answer entry (an alternative to drawing or graphing with a mouse) and works with screen readers, and we're continually improving accessibility. For specific accommodations, email support@xyzhomework.com.
